As a longtime editor of Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, the textbook that trained generations of physicians, and across 38 years leading NIAID under seven presidents, Dr. Anthony Fauci helped architect PEPFAR, the program credited with saving an estimated 25 million lives. Then he wrote On Call, so the next generation would know exactly what public service costs.
He did all of it with quiet, relentless dedication and, for a stretch, while managing science-deniers with the impulse control of a toddler.
